In 1979 Egil Øyjord was invited as a guest scientist to the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT). During his stay at CIMMYT, he filmed sowing of wheat plots with Øyjord seeders. In about 1972, CIMMYT decided to mechanize the program, and of course, the first piece of equipment to be purchased was the Øyjord Drill. In the late 1970s, a double cone drill was developed by Egil Øyjord, and this drill significantly facilitated the seeding of segregating populations. In 1983 it was reported that CIMMYT had 14 single and double cone drills. In the past when all seeding was done by hand it frequently took them more than one month to seed their breeding nurseries of approximately 80 hectares. In 1983, CIMMYT had more than 180 hectares of breeding nurseries and yield trial plots, and they seeded their nurseries in about 10 to 14 days.
