The first Oyjord plot seeder

August 29, 2017 By admin

The first Oyjord plot seeder for front mounting on a two wheeled garden tractor was constructed in the workshop of the Norwegian Institute of Agricultural Engineering at Ås. It came in use at the Institute of farm crops, Agricultural University of Norway, in the spring of 1958. The results were successful, and the “Committee on Mechanization of Field Experiments” decided that research assistant Egil Øyjord should continue to develop plot seeders.

The Love Oyjord seeder

August 29, 2017 By admin

The LOVE/0yjord Seeder is a semi-mounted, three point hitch agricultural seed metering implement. It features a full width, front packing roller followed by individual double disc ground openers and trailing packer wheels. The seed metering and distribution system facilitate ease of calibration and multiple plot sowing.

The LOVE/Oyjord Seeder is designed for use on prepared flat or raised seed beds, with a maximum seed bed height above the tire surface of six inches. The tires have an adjustable center to center tread width from 60 to 78 inches. The seeder can be purchased with options for seeding 3, 4, 6, 7 or 8 rows at a minimum center to center spacing of five inches, and at ground speeds from 2-1/2 to 4 miles per hour.

The LOVE/Oyjord offers a complete seeding system including continuous full bed sowing using a Bulk Seed Hopper refilling from separate containers, a Small Batch Funnel for individual seed lots, or the seeding of individual seed lots in bed lengths less than 10 feet with the Feeder Divider package.

Mexico 1979

August 29, 2017 By admin

In 1979 Egil Øyjord was invited as a guest scientist to the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Centre (CIMMYT). During his stay at CIMMYT, he filmed sowing of wheat plots with Øyjord seeders. In about 1972, CIMMYT decided to mechanize the program, and of course, the first piece of equipment to be purchased was the Øyjord Drill. In the late 1970s, a double cone drill was developed by Egil Øyjord, and this drill significantly facilitated the seeding of segregating populations. In 1983 it was reported that CIMMYT had 14 single and double cone drills. In the past when all seeding was done by hand it frequently took them more than one month to seed their breeding nurseries of approximately 80 hectares. In 1983, CIMMYT had more than 180 hectares of breeding nurseries and yield trial plots, and they seeded their nurseries in about 10 to 14 days.
